Unmasking Venezuelan Celebration Footage and AI Images of Maduro.

Synthetic pictures claiming to depict Venezuela's president under arrest following his capture by the United States have garnered tens of millions of impressions on social media.

How AI Images of Maduro Appeared Soon After

The first fake AI image seemingly showing him taken off a plane surfaced shortly after. This image was unpublished by any official US channels; it was instead uploaded on X by an account purporting to be an “AI video art enthusiast”.

Our analysis used an AI-watermark detector, confirming the image was produced or modified with AI tools.

Additional AI-generated pictures began to spread in the ensuing period, purporting to present additional perspectives of Maduro under guard. Discernible logos on the graphics show they were posted by an Instagram account named ultravfx.

The detection tool confirms the further images were similarly created or altered Google AI.

Authentic Image Released but Fakes Continued

The former US president posted the initial authentic image of Maduro in handcuffs aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. Yet following the authentic image was published, AI-generated images persisted online but were modified to incorporate the grey athletic wear seen on Maduro.

Reverse image searches show the new fake images were first posted on TikTok by a graphic design profile. Once again, analysis confirms these subsequent pictures were created or altered generative artificial intelligence.

Main Takeaways:

  • Synthetic media gained traction following the events of the president's apprehension.
  • The first fake picture was shared very quickly on social media.
  • Detection software like AI-watermark detectors helped to verify the images as inauthentic.
  • Fabrications continued to spread and be updated even after the publication of authentic images.
  • The origin of many fakes was linked to social media accounts dedicated to AI art.
