The Year 2026 Dubbed the Age of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent indie games event was highly engaging, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are staking their claim.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Frogs are far from new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. However, their visibility has noticeably surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are serious amphibian adventures.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this trend, I undertook a deep dive into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's growing prominence in the broader culture is also apparent elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the explosion in gaming looks especially strong.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

In my opinion, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities lend themselves to a myriad of innovative control schemes.

Many of the showcased games directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be entering a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
