Doris Included in Ireland Squad But McCarthy Omitted

Rugby team selection news

Newly reappointed manager Andy Farrell has included skipper Doris in his Ireland roster for the autumn Tests, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

Doris, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in early May, recently returned to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Second row Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions match against Australia in the summer.

Ulster forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Nash also miss out due to injury, while full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having hip surgery after the Lions tour.

Leinster forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-man squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union says new provincial duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province wing Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".

After playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their previous encounter, Ireland host Japan, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced players and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said Farrell, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to Australia.

In a mostly experienced squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will again compete for the first-choice fly-half position. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, with the two players poised to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's United Rugby Championship game at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the third number 10 chosen with the coach deciding not to calling up the province's Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran group of midfield options. Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at number 15.

Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his national team debut during the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of his province's URC league games so far and featured in the second string's loss by England in the English city previously.

McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a cap.

Southern province second row Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those Tests, is retained, and experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.

Conan, who played in all three Lions matches during the tour, is set to deputise for the captain if the skipper fails to recover full fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.

The national team will meet in the capital on the start of the week before flying to the US on the following day.
